Health, according to the World Health Organization, is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.”
In recognition of this, COPE uses SAMSHA’s* model when we talk about personal health empowerment as an approach that includes all dimensions of our lives – the emotional, physical, occupational, intellectual, financial, social, environmental, and spiritual parts. These dimensions are dynamic and interconnect with each other. See the tool we created to help you set goals for your health empowerment.
Health Empowerment also requires personal health literacy. Health literacy is measured by the degree to which you can find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and take action. COPE’s services are here to help you build your health literacy.
In this part of the library, we offer you:
- SAMHSA’s Creating a Healthier Life: A Step-by-Step Guide to Wellness
- A Quick Guide to Health Literacy from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
